Town Council statement in response to Valparaiso joint statement

We are pleased Mr. Darryl Jackson, Jr., Sheriff David Reynolds and Mayor Jon Costas have brought closure to the events of August 29, 2015 wherein Burns Harbor Police Officer Tim Lucas arrested Mr. Jackson during the Porter County Gang Taskforce patrol in Valparaiso. We have fully supported Officer Lucas, Chief Mike Heckman and the entire Burns Harbor Police Department throughout this entire matter and are happy that the parties are moving forward in a spirit of reconciliation.

We thank Mr. Jackson for his apologies to Officer Lucas, Sheriff Reynolds and other members of the Gang Taskforce. We thank Sheriff Reynolds for his leadership of law enforcement officers in Porter County and for his commitment of further dialogue to improve relations with citizens. We thank Mayor Costas for leading by example in acknowledging his regret for offensive comments and that he too has learned from this experience.

The Town of Burns Harbor pledges to be a collaborative partner in the efforts to facilitate healthy and constructive dialogue between and amongst all interested parties.

James McGee - President, Burns Harbor Town Council
